Making It ART 2014….showday!

BBC Children in Need’s Pudsey Bear dropped by on Friday 7th March, 2014, to visit this year’s Making It ART 2014, thus ensuring that this was a magical day in the Reach calendar.  It was the day when students with disabilities from Swindon schools, Uplands, Crowdys Hill and Commonweal and St. Nicholas School, Chippenham, performed on the main stage at The Wyvern Theatre, Swindon.

Swindon’s Deputy Mayor, Theresa Page, opened the show after first visiting The Opportunities Fair in the theatre’s foyers.  The fair was a one stop shop for members of the DSCF3444public, young people taking part in the event, their parents and carers, to find out about leisure and career information in and around Swindon attended by local organisations, providing trade stands. The fair was hosted by Swindon Advocacy Movement (SAMS).

The young performers have been working with Reach arts workers for 6 weeks preparing their drama pieces. These workshops allowed the students to think about who they want to be when they leave school.  The show took the form of a train journey that carried the audience on a trip stopping at a range of stations along the way.  At each stop the schools performed their unique pieces ranging from ‘Hope Street’ to ‘Dream Street’ stations and others in between.  At each stop the various schools performed and every piece was different.

The audience, of around 400, was made up of members of the public and the performers themselves. The Wyvern Theatre was amazing; the volunteers who helped on the day were so supportive. The funding we received to put on this event was provided by BBC Children in Need and The Aster Communities.  Reach would like to thank Nationwide for their help with the day and we also recognise the on-going support we receive from Swindon Borough Council.
