Making It Art 2018

Making it ART 2018 happened on the main stage of the Wyvern Theatre on Thursday 8th March at 1pm. This show was performed by young disabled people from Swindon and was produced by Reach Inclusive Arts, funded by BBC Children in Need.

This was the first of the 3 years Wyvern Theatre projects funded by BBC Children in Need.

Commonweal, Crowdys Hill and Uplands schools took part in the project. The show was a great success, opened by compere, Naz Osmanoglou supported by Pudsey Bear from BBC Children in Need. Our arts workers each devised drama pieces, with the young people that were amongst some of the most sophisticated that we have seen yet. The event attracted a good sized audience and we were fortunate that a number of volunteers came forward to help on the day, including three employees from Columbia Threadneedle Investments. We were joined this year by a group of staff volunteers from Welcome Break who are corporate fundraisers for CIN.  Trustee Millie Hammond helped with all the sessions at Uplands School and also on the day.   The show was opened by Swindon’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Maureen Penny.

The project was described by performers as: “fun”, “great”, “awesome” and “exciting” and many went on to say, “I would love to do this more”, “It’s really good because we can do acting” and “I can’t wait for the acting. They help me with what I want to do and help me have fun”.

One of the teachers involved in the project said “Some students found the confidence to create movement by themselves, and had the confidence to perform a duet on stage.  At the beginning of the project some students were reluctant to explore creating movement and felt self-conscious when sharing movement with the group.  Everybody performed. For these student to be able to create their own materiel and perform it on stage with theatre lights and an audience, shows that their self-confidence has definitely grown from the beginning of the project”.

Making It Art 2019 will return to The Wyvern Theatre for another FREE show on Thursday 14th March at 1pm.
